Second time painting one of my secret painting spots. The sunflowers have multiplied and are competing for real estate on the skyline - the foliage has grown substantially. I thought painting the same place twice would lack inspiration - quite the opposite, It was like visiting a child that has all grown up. One lesson in painting and in life, the only constant guaranteed is change.

The great thing about revisiting the same scene is the ability to experiment frequently, Revisiting a place, makes it easier for an artist to notice, catch, and record new observations.In this scene I experimented with downward strokes of the brush to paint the wet ground and loosened up the sunflowers to allot for more natural feel.

Painting of my husband playing checkers at a favorite local coffee shop in Queen Anne Seattle. This little fauvist rendition of my husband is in the impressionist style made famous by Henri Matisse. The coffee shop is called El Diablo - a quirky, unique local spot known for its Cuban coffee. I first visited the little place when my husband and I started dating. Being the Cuban that I am, I was craving Cuban coffee really bad and my husband did his best to find a place that served Cuban coffee to satisfy my craving. It was not easy. In the short time that I have lived in Seattle, I have never met another Cuban person. The coffee really wasn't up to my standards. Not authentic at all for my taste- but the place was quaint and artsy. Nearly every square inch of the shop was covered in murals and they have board games (like checkers) layed out for their patrons. We had a really nice time playing checkers and sampling the coffee. Eventually we moved into the area just a few blocks away.

Coco Beach

This piece is a little memory from when my husband and I stayed at Coco beach, Florida near Kennedy Space Center. Florida has such lovely beaches. The water is so calm and ankle deep. The light blue color and otherworldly calm of the ocean at around 7 AM makes me wish I was there again. I enjoyed working this piece and capturing the early morning light. I tried to capture the sense of calm around 7 in the morning when the light is bright yet still soft and cool and the water is shallow and still. Very few minute waves at this time - almost as if the ocean is slowly rolling out of bed. Seems like we were the first ones out near the shore in the morning - because the deep blue of what had been night lurks in the distance.

This little piece found it's way into the home of a talented published poet and art collector Claire Vogel Camargo. I am very proud and flattered to reveal that this painting was the inspiration for Claire's poem. It was just published in a newly published poetry book entitled: LIFTING THE SKY: SOUTHWESTERN HAIKU & HAIGA by Dos Gatos Press, Austin, Texas 2013. Her poem is a "haiku" on page 62 and reads:

" spiny arms
saguaros poke the sky
stars spill everywhere "

This piece was inspired by the modest and suggestive still life paintings by Giorgio Morandi.When I first saw Morandi's work, I felt quite unimpressed by his simple, muted, and carefully arranged still life's. As I analyzed them further, I was slowly drawn into his suggestive and powerful pieces. So simple, so contrary to the classical paintings that people "are supposed to appreciate," I was swiftly taken in by his bold rebelliousness! As I researched further, I came across an article of him in an American Artist Magazine. The Title caught my attention and my heart. It read, " Futurism, fascism, two World Wars, and armies of hostile critics failed to divert Giorgio Morandi from his self-appointed task." Wait a second! Harsh critics? Art as a self-appointed task? I can really relate to and appreciate this guy, so I arranged a still life of my own. I was driven and inspired to study for myself what drove this guy to paint what he did. It took me quite some time to set up this still life. It seems that the simpler something appears the harder it is to make it successful.

I never had such difficulty setting up a still life to my satisfaction before! And I admit I have more experimenting to do! I chose some empty cosmetic jars that I had kept from the days that I use to make my own lotions and soaps. I also found an inexpensive rectangular shaped glass vase and those spectacularly wrapped Chinese soaps I am so fond of. Lighting was also important, because I wanted to cast the right shadow to show off the carefully arranged pieces.

The painting itself was washed with a lime green under painting. Once dried, I quickly drew an abstract gesture sketch of the still life in 18kt gold and silver. The painting was then finished off with high quality oil paints. I do not feel the final photo does this piece justice. Again, my photographic skills are an issue. Something else I must work on.

"Roses" is a fun, colorful little work of art. It was first developed with a wash of bright pink, followed by a sketch in 18kt gold leaf. The final touches were made with vivacious brush strokes that further emphasize the free spirited nature of the piece. I was inspired by the roses I use to make when I was a child. Hence, this little piece is a product of "the free spirited child in me". And why not? Why can't we paint as if we were children every now and then? This is a painting dedicated to those moments in which we want to stop or turn back the clock. Those are the moments where we just wish to be free like children once again. This piece is an artist's way of truly stopping to smell the roses.

This painting is my rendition of the waterfall painting in the Twilight Zone episode "Midnight Sun." I am a huge fan of the Zone, and this episode is by far my favorite. This old television series created by Rod Serling is completely in black and white, so I had no idea what colors the Waterfall painting was comprised of. I wanted a little piece of the Zone to treasure and hang on my own wall, so I painted a wash of Green blue on canvas, waited for it to dry and made a highly abstract 18kt gold sketch of the lovely Zone painting (to the best my memory could recall). Then I completed the painting in the colors I believed would be there using the confident brush strokes as were apparent in "Norma's" work; albeit, with much more texture - especially on the waterfall. The texture really adds to the feeling that the water is actually cascading down into the cool blue lagoon below. After much research, I have no idea who actually painted the first rendition, and although I made mine vastly different than the original, It is my homage to the artist and to this wonderful episode. If you haven't seen the original twilight zone episodes, I most highly recommend it. It is a nostalgic television series set in the late 1950's and early 1960's. This episode in particular is about an artist (Norma) and her landlady (Mrs. Bronson) and their adventure through doomsday.The Twilight Zone gives us a glimpse into their reality as the Earth slowly begins to move away from its natural orbit - moving all of it's inhabitants closer and closer into the sun. What happens? Well, I really don't want to ruin the ending for you, so I won't tell you. You can find the episode on Netflix if you so choose.
