This piece was inspired by the modest and suggestive still life paintings by Giorgio Morandi.When I first saw Morandi's work, I felt quite unimpressed by his simple, muted, and carefully arranged still life's. As I analyzed them further, I was slowly drawn into his suggestive and powerful pieces. So simple, so contrary to the classical paintings that people "are supposed to appreciate," I was swiftly taken in by his bold rebelliousness! As I researched further, I came across an article of him in an American Artist Magazine. The Title caught my attention and my heart. It read, " Futurism, fascism, two World Wars, and armies of hostile critics failed to divert Giorgio Morandi from his self-appointed task." Wait a second! Harsh critics? Art as a self-appointed task? I can really relate to and appreciate this guy, so I arranged a still life of my own. I was driven and inspired to study for myself what drove this guy to paint what he did. It took me quite some time to set up this still life. It seems that the simpler something appears the harder it is to make it successful.

I never had such difficulty setting up a still life to my satisfaction before! And I admit I have more experimenting to do! I chose some empty cosmetic jars that I had kept from the days that I use to make my own lotions and soaps. I also found an inexpensive rectangular shaped glass vase and those spectacularly wrapped Chinese soaps I am so fond of. Lighting was also important, because I wanted to cast the right shadow to show off the carefully arranged pieces.

The painting itself was washed with a lime green under painting. Once dried, I quickly drew an abstract gesture sketch of the still life in 18kt gold and silver. The painting was then finished off with high quality oil paints. I do not feel the final photo does this piece justice. Again, my photographic skills are an issue. Something else I must work on.

"Roses" is a fun, colorful little work of art. It was first developed with a wash of bright pink, followed by a sketch in 18kt gold leaf. The final touches were made with vivacious brush strokes that further emphasize the free spirited nature of the piece. I was inspired by the roses I use to make when I was a child. Hence, this little piece is a product of "the free spirited child in me". And why not? Why can't we paint as if we were children every now and then? This is a painting dedicated to those moments in which we want to stop or turn back the clock. Those are the moments where we just wish to be free like children once again. This piece is an artist's way of truly stopping to smell the roses.

This painting is my rendition of the waterfall painting in the Twilight Zone episode "Midnight Sun." I am a huge fan of the Zone, and this episode is by far my favorite. This old television series created by Rod Serling is completely in black and white, so I had no idea what colors the Waterfall painting was comprised of. I wanted a little piece of the Zone to treasure and hang on my own wall, so I painted a wash of Green blue on canvas, waited for it to dry and made a highly abstract 18kt gold sketch of the lovely Zone painting (to the best my memory could recall). Then I completed the painting in the colors I believed would be there using the confident brush strokes as were apparent in "Norma's" work; albeit, with much more texture - especially on the waterfall. The texture really adds to the feeling that the water is actually cascading down into the cool blue lagoon below. After much research, I have no idea who actually painted the first rendition, and although I made mine vastly different than the original, It is my homage to the artist and to this wonderful episode. If you haven't seen the original twilight zone episodes, I most highly recommend it. It is a nostalgic television series set in the late 1950's and early 1960's. This episode in particular is about an artist (Norma) and her landlady (Mrs. Bronson) and their adventure through doomsday.The Twilight Zone gives us a glimpse into their reality as the Earth slowly begins to move away from its natural orbit - moving all of it's inhabitants closer and closer into the sun. What happens? Well, I really don't want to ruin the ending for you, so I won't tell you. You can find the episode on Netflix if you so choose.

The Drive Home

I sold this particular piece back in March and it is only now that I come around to finally writing about it. I suppose it is a little difficult to write about what exactly inspired me to paint this. Although the inspiration to paint this piece was initiated by a melancholy moment, the precise instant in question was transformed into a moment of clarity, vision, and hope. You see, this is a painting of a highway. A highway I regularly take to visit a loved one. It was getting dark on my way back home on this particular highway, but it was no ordinary trip. I had just gotten word that my loved one had developed cancer. I was grief stricken and in a state of shock that ominous evening; however, as I looked up, I was able to see through the thickness of my own haze to realize the beauty that was before me. It was the most beautiful sunset I had ever seen. The beauty was magnified because amidst the swirling pink and purple skies and the raging magenta sun, the surroundings were pitch black and the colors of this awesome sunset were the only colors to bounce off of the path that was the highway. Palm trees seemed to sway and bend forward in a blurry homage to this magnificent sight. Something about this sight whispered into my very soul, the comforting words, "Everything will be alright, there is nothing to worry about." As time passed, the situation resolved gracefully into the positive and the worry and fear of the situation resolved itself into celebration and elated thanksgiving. Perhaps the universe does speak to us at times, perhaps there is a guiding light to guide us, perhaps it is before us at all times - we just need to open our eyes and look ahead.

"Fleeting moments" is a painterly piece devoted to those little moments in life. Those are the moments when one seldom gets to contemplate on the beauty of just being alive and enjoying the present moment. In today's hectic world, we run about here and there busy with our work, studies, families, traffic, and sometimes just preoccupied with our daily survival. How often do we find time to just enjoy a lovely little stroll on the beach at sunrise? How often do we have time to truly contemplate the beauty and meaning of life? I have noticed that these moments are becoming increasingly scarce and rare - as if time were speeding up. And when we do come across such a lovely moment, it is almost as if it is fleeting, running away as if we are not supposed to catch it. Has anyone else noticed this? Noticed how the button on life has been accidentally set to fast forward? Can someone please tell me? Is time speeding up? This lovely little piece is a painting devoted to those rare fleeting moments of life. I began this piece with a bright red under painting and an abstract gesture sketch in 18 kt gold leaf. The painting was completed with bold loose brushstrokes reminiscent of the fauvist style. Clearly, the intense red under painting and gold sketch are visible underneath, reminding the viewer of his fleeting place in the world. Soon the illusion of the beautiful beach will be gone. What remains is his mortality as strong and intense and human as blood and bones, yet as precious as gold.

This is the second time that "The Path In The Bois De Boulogne (Sentier, Bois De Boulogne)" by Henri Matisse. Has inspired me. "Golden Tribute" is actually my second tribute to this fine and profound work of art. "The Path in the Bois De Boulogne continues to mystify me and inspire me every time I see it; so much so, that I wish to become one with it by running into the painted path, swirling about freely along with it's majestic brush strokes. If you have never seen this particular painting by Henri Matisse - I most certainly recommend that you do so. It is fauvism at it's best. Unlike my previous painting, which was simply inspired by the free fauvist style that Matisse perfected, Golden tribute is a tribute to this particular Matisse painting - although I have gone about it in an entirely new way. I first started with a wash of yellow ochres and burnt umber's. Once dried, I created a highly abstract gesture sketch in 18kt gold leaf. The painting was then completed with bright high quality oil paints alive with confident brush strokes and texture. Every artist seems to have their own style that they develop over time. I have grown very fond of gesture sketching my work in gold prior to traditionally applying the oil. I believe this to be my own style. Although, I will never stick to any particular one, it's still feels nice to believe this to be my very own technique.

This painting is a still life I arranged on my studio window sill. Included in the arrangement is a reclining nude statue by Henri Matisse. I don't actually own the statue, but I thought it would be a good tribute to the fauvist style of this piece. The cobalt blue under painting adds a cooling, soft glow to all of the objects arranged on the window. I love the idea of painting a window view. It is like adding an extra window in your home, only this window is a view into my own little world. I hope you like the view.

"Botanical Garden Paradise" piece based on a trip my husband and I took at the Seattle Botanical Garden in Washington State. I began this painting with a unique underpainting achieved in abstract patches of colors, including purple and lime green. The painting was worked through in various layers in order to achieve the right texture and brush work. It is a work dedicated to color and expression of a place I love very much. The colors in this piece represent the life and richness found in that place, such as the deep rich soil that is expressed in various deep shades of purple. Even all the foliage takes on a unique color - further expressing the amazing liveliness of the plant life.
