Deserted" is a unique landscape set in Utah close to the San Juan River. The soil is red, giving the appearance of a Martian landscape. The myriad of detailed yet painterly sagebrushes offer a striking green complement to the red soil. Due to the opposite colors, this piece is sure to be a focal point. The yellow underpainting also adds warmth to this piece - giving the feeling of a desert ambiance.
Evening Hike

Oil on canvas
Collection: The Artist
"Evening Hike" is a painting with a personal connection for me. My husband has to travel extensively for business and on one rare occassion when he had back to back travel, he decided to take me with him to Arizona. What a lovely and intriguing place! He took me for a drive not far from where we were staying and although I was 8 months pregnant at the time, I was so impressed by the strange beauty around me that I decided it was time for a little spontaneous hike! It was late and the sun was already setting, but that did not stop our adventure into wonderland. It only made it more exciting! This painting captures that unique tone that envelopes the environment as it gets dark.
The Fauvist Path
11 x 14
Oil on canvas
Private Collection
Although this piece is based on a personal photograph of a snowy path, my initial inspiration for it was "The Path In The Bois De Boulogne (Sentier, Bois De Boulogne)" by Henri Matisse. I have always been enamored by the free flowing paintings inspired by the fauvist movement, particularly by Matisse in The Bois De Boulogne. In my unique painting, I have applied this free expressive brush stroke to my own work. It is my expression not only of the artistic freedom found in the fauvist style, but "The Fauvist Path" is my dedication to the fauvist movement. I have chosen to paint a dark snowy setting as representative of the fauvist choice of artistic expression - for this choice is seldom understood or appreciated; hence, a dark, cold, lonely path, that is also filled with awe and beauty at every corner. I hope this painting inspires you and fills your walls with expression.
Instant Good Morning
Oil on gallery wrap canvas
12 x 12
The entire idea behind this painting was to include the Nescafe instant coffee. My husband had this Nescafe in our cupboard since we were married. We are currently planning a trip back to India, and we were wondering what to do about my coffee addiction while we stay there. Yes, I'm a coffee addict, but it's a medical necessity I swear! If I don't have coffee I get severe migraines..(That's my story and I'm sticken to it!) Anyway, he suggested that we take this old Nescafe with us on our trip. I mean, can coffee ever go bad? So while checking for the expiration date, we noticed that the label read: " Best BEFORE 12 months from manufacture." Being a daily painter, I believe that art should reflect and celebrate all of these little happy memories of our lives. "Instant Good Morning" is just that, a small celebration of our lives. Every moment of our lives together, regardless of how small and insignificant they may seem (like this story) should be cherished as if they are monumental milestones.

Sunset at The Shore
Once in a while a painting comes along that I have difficulty parting with. It is usually when I have some kind of connection with it. Sunset at the shore is one of these paintings. This one in particular was started the day I gave birth to my son Sanjay. I completed it after he was born.
It is special for this reason of course, but also for the feeling that I had during its production.
As I painted the water, I could actually hear the waves falling on the rocks, I smelled the ocean and the beach, and I was reminded of the feeling one has of visiting the beach at sunrise. Maybe I'm crazy to have heard and felt these instances during the painting process? Or maybe the sort of focus that goes into a good painting brings one to its place in current time... Or maybe it is proof that painting is indeed a spiritual process equivalent to meditation.

"Garden Oasis" is a unique watercolor painting. It is a painting of a water feature in a lush garden corner. Garden Oasis is one of the watercolor sketches I make prior to my larger works. For this particular piece I began with a pencil drawing and then added an ink gesture drawing to the sketch. After the gesture was completed I finished with watercolors.

"Zen Buddhist monastery" is a unique, dramatic landscape! According to zen buddhists, painting is a form of practice, much like meditation. This piece is inspired by this thought as well as traditional Zen artwork. It consists of a buddhist retreat nestled within the mountains. The magnitude of the mountains compared to the monastery is representative of Mount Sumeru, which is synonymous with the grandness of nature as it compares to an individual. This piece is exceptionally detailed with the colorful reflections and the curious beaches and sand dunes.

Spanish Still Life with Gold Quilt

"Spanish Still Life with Gold Quilt" is a unique, dramatic piece! It is inspired by "Spanish Still Life" by Matisse. In my rendition, I have added a dramatic floral wallpaper and a blue quilt with 18kt gold leaf. When placed at a different angle, the gold leaf shines - thereby adding interest to the piece from various angles. The Gold is the only mutually exclusive color on this painting. Every color found in each element is repeated somewhere throughout the painting at least once. By doing this, The eye is kept in constant motion, gauranteed to keep you staring! This piece is brought to life with the myriad of patterns that are simultaneously complementary as well as contrasting. The use of such bright, luminous complementary colors are sure to transform your living or work space!

Heliotrope and Yellow Roses
Acrylic on canvas

Heliotrope and Yellow Roses is one of my personal favorites. It really proves the versatility that acrylics offer. I also love this one in particular because it was quite a challenge to paint! This was actually the first time that I painted roses, and I'm surprised and happy with the result. It taught me the valuable lesson of trying out unfamiliar waters. I adopted a new rule after completing this painting. (one that I stick to religiously now) The rule is to plunge into new challenges without hesitation, and sticking with it till the end!

In The Wilderness With Matisse
Acrylic on Canvas
8 x 10
SOLD!
Henry Matisse is one of my all time favorite artists! He has given me abundant inspiration and enthusiasm for art. "In the Wilderness with Matisse," is my perspective on Matisse and his work. I thoroughly enjoyed working this painting! I began with a gray wash and added patches of colors before composing this piece. The gray wash really makes the colors stand out, and the patches of colors add an abstract intensity that is apparent in much of Matisse's work. Most people seldom understand or appreciate Matisse's work. I have always been enamored by his freely composed colorful masterpieces! Realistic paintings offer their own challenges, but impressionism such as Matisse's paintings, are a challenge within themselves! In an impressionistic work, there is always an extra step in the painterly process; the artist must not just copy and reproduce the picturesque scene before him, he must now decide how to change and manipulate the scene in an entirely new way, and this new perspective is driven entirely by his imagination and intuition. Besides these two key components or "gifts," he must be attentive to making his imaginative scene harmonious by correctly making the colors, shapes, and perspective work in the scene. Sometimes it will not, but if he or she is sharp and gifted enough, the composition will work! This is the reason why I always prefer an impressionist piece to realism. I believe that in realistic works, the aforementioned process is done for you. There is hardly a creative, imaginative aspect apparent in realism as is incumbent in impressionism.
This painting will go well with any space!

Most people are surprised to know that I was schooled primarily in oils. (Most of my work over the years has been primarily in acrylics.) Although acrylics can be very convenient at times, I decided to return to oils for this particular piece. It was a breath of fresh air! Kind of like meeting an old friend! It was a joy to smoothly glide the paint over the canvas again! I was surprised to find that the colors nearly jumped off the canvas to bite me! They were extremely bright and luminous! All of these years I have chosen acrylics for primarily one reason; with acrylics, you are guaranteed outstanding bright colors! However, oils now offer the same exceptional luminosity in their colors! I will be sure to use them more frequently now.

In this little Matisse rendition, I gave the canvas an orange wash on the left side and a blue wash on the right. Doing so, sets certain tones and guarantees that the washes will be visible underneath the painting. Blue and orange are opposite colors, and dividing the painting as such , gives it a striking abstract intensity that is unique and fresh. The under washes of orange come through the window and the table before it - as if the warmth is entering the place. The blue highlights the curtain - suggesting the coolness of the darkness.
Seattle Japanese Garden

This painting is based on a photograph that we took at the Seattle Botanical Gardens. I used a different technique for this painting. After my initial sketch, I traced the drawing with black line then filled in the color. After the painting was complete, I retraced the black lines to make sure every line was well established. Highlighting objects with black line makes the objects stand out. In "Seattle Japanese Garden" I gave it a unique look by tracing every object in the scene with black.

Example of how painting adds interest to a space.
There is a memorable story behind this painting. Originally, I planned to paint this painting plein aire (on site). I was busy sketching the painting in front of this grandiose tree in Coral Gables, Florida when I was interrupted by a police officer. He asked me what I was doing.. after showing him my sketch, he told me to "move it along." Hence, I had to finish this one in my studio. Hmmm, I guess art can be a crime!

I liked very much Heliotrope, Still life and Green dining room, for the use of colour, my daughter preferred Sunflowers and Student, so fine!
ReplyDeleteWow !! These are some impressive pictures Rivkah. I especially liked the Heliotrope and the yellow roses. Rabbi was equally impressive and the red pears was enchanting.
